Registered Programs

In the Lead 180 (ITL 180) is a character and leadership development program designed for youth in conflict with the criminal justice system. The objective is to build and enhance key protective factors that are known to reduce risk taking behaviour and re-offending.

The program consists of 6 modules designed to help participants explore their potential and existing strengths and abilities to be a great leader for themselves, their peers, their family, and community.

The module topics are:

#1 – Defining Leadership and Identifying Strengths
#2 – Exploring Influences
#3 – Responsible Decision Making
#4 – Developing Strengths & Leadership Through Challenges
#5 – Managing Uncertainty and Failure
#6 – Envisioning a Positive Future

Program Details & Referral Eligibility

When: Tuesdays from 6:00PM – 7:30PM

Where: Online facilitated by In the Lead staff.  ITL 180 will email youth and families the weekly class Zoom link

What:   6 sessions

For most effective learning and impact, youth should attend the number of classes assigned in a continuous sequence. 

Who: Youth ages 14-17 (at time of offense) who show strengths and leadership potential

To be eligible for this program, the young leaders must have access to a computer or phone that connects to the internet and the ability to participate in a private space or has access to headphones with a microphone.

What the ITL180 facilitator will do to ensure privacy:

  • Use an encrypted video calling platform
  • Monitor who is admitted into the class
  • Facilitate programing from a private space

What ITL 180 expects of the Young Leaders to ensure privacy:

  • Use only first names to introduce themselves
  • Use a generic background
  • Use headphones if there is anyone else present in their home

Referral Process:

Journal topics include:  

  • Self-Control – understanding feelings and behaviours that can lead to trouble
  • Social Values – identifying your values and their impact
  • Responsible Thinking- examining your thinking and recognizing errors in it that may get you into trouble
  • Peer Relationships – learning to understand healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and how to handle social pressure
  • Family Ties – Evaluating family relationships and the roles participants play in them
  • Substance Abuse – helping participants evaluate the impact of substance abuse on their lives

Participants will work on a journal topic at their own pace with the assistance of the program facilitator.

Referral Process:

A program that examines various strategies and techniques for recognizing and managing anger. Throughout the eight weeks, participants go through the stages of the anger cycle and what this looks like in their personal lives, thereby enabling them to recognize signs of anger and manage it.  

The program uses a multi-media approach to facilitation, using varied and interactive methods to ensure every learner achieves a full grasp of the material presented. 

Program Details & Referral Eligibility:

When: Tuesday’s from 4:30-6:00pm

Where: Online,  facilitated  by Calgary Youth Attendance Center (CYAC) via Edmonton YMCA

What: Program runs for 8 weeks

Referral Process:

Youth must be pre-registered and cannot enroll after the first of eight weekly sessions begin

This program covers topics including the consequences of speeding, distracted driving (cell phones, texting), and driving under the influence.  It also discusses the various costs of dangerous driving (legal, business, and personal costs) and how a Criminal Record related to such offences can affect a young person’s future

A program designed to assist participants who are considering and or transitioning to independent living.  This program is geared toward youth aged 17 to 19 and who would like to better prepare themselves for entering the next chapter of their lives 

This unique program consists of eight sessions and covers topics including, but not limited to

  • Financial literacy
  • Housing, employment
  • Nutrition
  • Preparing for post-secondary education
  • Professional relationships
  • Effective communication
  • Conflict resolution

When: Program is offered Wednesday’s 4:30-6:00.  

Where: Online,  facilitated  by Calgary Youth Attendance Center (CYAC) via Edmonton YMCA

What: Program runs for 8 weeks

A program where the concept of empathy is explored, including its importance, what it feels like to experience empathy (both personally and for others) and the decision process behind it.

There is a focus on how the use of empathy is important in relationship building and how, with practice, it can become something you ‘just do’.

TD bank designed Money Matters to help youth take better care of themselves by taking better care of their money.  The CYAC will facilitate this program and talk about how to manage money online and in daily life.  

Session topics include:

Ways to Save – Youth will explore different ways to save for the future and learn about interest and how it grows.  They will also be introduced to a variety of grants and registered saving plans.

Borrowing Money – Youth will gain an understanding of what credit is and how it works, including good and bad credit and how to build a credit history.  They will be provided with information on a variety of ways to borrow money and how interest affects the amount you owe back.

RESTART is a program offered through McMan Youth Services.

Through group work, individual counselling and recreational activities youth will learn about the following topics:

  • Root causes contributing to young person’s criminal behaviour
  • Replacing criminal activity with positive activity
  • Conflict resolution
  • Impact of crime
  • Critical thinking

Program Details & Referral Eligibility:

When: Mondays 5:30-7:00

Where: Online,  facilitated  by McMan.  CYAC will email youth invites with Zoom link.

Referral Process:

Fill out the online RESTART Referral Form or download the RESTART Referral Form.

  • Enrollment requirements are now an ongoing process
  • RESTART no longer waits until the 10 sessions are finished to have a YP enter the Restart group sessions
  • Youth MUST attend all 10 sessions 
  • PLEASE make sure there is enough time before file is due back to assign this sanction
  • Youth will need internet access, a private space, and the expectation to be on screen with volume on should be shared with youth at the time they are referred

What the RESTART facilitator will do to ensure privacy:

  • Use an encrypted video calling platform (ZOOM)
  • Monitor who is admitted into the class
  • Facilitate programing from a private space

What CYAC expects of the Youth to ensure privacy:

  • Use only first names to introduce themselves

Youth will learn about bullying and its destructive effects, and collectively inspire to create safe, caring, and respectful schools and communities.

Youth will actively participate in individual and group work to learn about  the impacts of shoplifting and theft.

Topics include:

  • Legal consequences – short and long term
  • Peer pressure
  • Victim impact
  • Economic consequences

  Participants will write an apology letter to the victim, taking responsibility for their offence, stating what they have learned in the session and how they intend to prevent re-offending.

The WiseGuyz Program is an evidence-informed, healthy relationship promotion program which gives boys a safe space to build essential relationship skills. These skills aim to promote healthy sexuality and relationship development while decreasing attitudes related to homophobia and gender-based violence.  

The program focuses on 4 core topics:

  1. Healthy Relationships
  2. Sexual Reproductive Health
  3. Gender and Media
  4. Human Rights, Advocacy, and Allyship

Participants have reported the following positive  impacts:

  1. Improved communication and conflict resolution skills
  2. Improved mental health
  3. Increase knowledge about their own sexual health and sexuality
  4. Improved ability to engage in healthier relationships
  5. Decreased homophobic attitudes
  6. Improved critical thinking about toxic masculinity
  7. Increased active and positive bystander intervention in response to peer violence.

Community Service

Youth are provided with the opportunity to complete community service hours through a supervised work program.  The Community Service Work Program aims to incorporate both community enhancement and an educational component in each placement, thus allowing the participants to take pride in their community while also learning valuable skills. 

 Community Service Placements Include:  

  • CITY OF CALGARY ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM: Participants perform tasks at the request of the City of Calgary Environmental and Education Initiatives Program.  Duties include various forms of parks maintenance (weeding, planting flowers, painting, etc).  Participants are provided with an educational and/or history lesson relating to the specific placement (ex.  Youth paint the geoglyphs on Signal Hill and receive a history lesson dating back to World War I; Cemetery clean up includes learning the history of many of Calgary’s founders). 
  • LYONS EYEGLASS RECYCLING PROGRAM:  Participants assist in sorting, repairing and cleaning donated eyeglasses, while learning about the places and people these eyeglasses will be provided to. 
  • WILDLIFE REHABILITATION SOCIETY: Participants assist staff by cleaning and building animal enclosures, sorting wood, and ground maintenance.  In turn, they are taught about the animals and their natural habitat, while also given the opportunity to feed and/or spend time with the animals. 
  • Community Association, school year and playground clean up. 

 Program is offered Saturday & Sundays from 9:00am-3:00pm

My Best Friend’s Closet is a youth empowerment program that provides high quality and on trend clothing, shoes and accessories to IN-NEED youth identifying as female for their school and recreational needs.

Youth will be given the opportunity to volunteer their time and help the program sort through clothes, prepare the items for clients to receive, work in a team environment and give back to their community.

Gratitude journals are used by individuals who wish to focus their attention on the positive things in their lives.  This is a great self-reflection activity for youth who may be struggling with a negative or limited outlook on their current life circumstances and/or future.
